The Padukka Divisional Secretariat division is considered as a historically important division within the Colombo district. Legend says that the town got its name as the Portuguese Army who was defeated by the Army of the King Seethawaka Rajasinghe in the battle adjoining Hanwella Fort rested in this place. (close to where AGA office is located today) until they settled their minds. Thus in the Sinhala language it was called ‘Paha Dukka’ (‘Paha’ = Vanish; ‘Dukka’ = Sadness), which became ‘Padukka’ later.

The Padukka Divisional Secretariat division can be considered as a significant Divisional Secretariat as it bears much historical, archaeological, and cultural as well as social importance.

Within the Kurugala Grama Niladhari division is the Kurugala Kandewatte Cave which is registered under the archaeological Department (No 1505, dated 2007.7.06) is considered in the government Gazettee as an important archaeological monument.

The only suspension bridge in the Colombo District runs across the Thummodara Grama Niladhari division within the division. The Ayre Bangalow too in the Damodhara Grama Niladhari division which was built in British Colonial times bears immense value.

Also, a Sattelite Centre a telecommunication centre equipped with high technology is situated in this division’s Galagedara East Grama Niladhari Division. This by compareItApplic"> enhances the division’s ability to translate into a New Technological era while preserving the City’s archaeological values.
